process : AUGUST 13 update, (scroll down for latest development)

nothing is more gratifying in terms of the creative process than
following the steps from idea, theory, concept, chaos and into form, until you
have reached a point where, what you had as just a seed becomes an actual fruit

something you can share with the world and say ... "this is the final statement"

its especially awesome when the idea is not the the most obvious, easiest concept
to develop from the beginning ...

I listen now to a song like KARMA and remember how I nearly trashed that track...
but I kept working on it and working on it and now its this ...

a favorite track for many people that listen to "Things That Go Bump in the Dark"

...

Now I'm in the process of crafting a piece that started from an Elvin Jones drum solo ...
its incredible to search for and find the steady pulse in a solo from a drum master like this ..
ESPECIALLY Elvin Jones because you can cut and splice and adjust the groove to be a 4/4 beat ..
OR
you can look deeply into what he is playing and find a dozen other possibilities to freak and accent...
So this is what I am working on now ... and there is no question about the rhythm and groove of Elvin Jones

so the the question becomes ...
can I make you feel it in a way that you hadn't felt it before ?

I imagine Monk, Hendrix, Fela, Premo & Guru , Dre, Dilla and every other visionary worked thru ideas, mixing elements until they found the sweet spot .. I'm pretty sure there was a process .. it didn't just happen .. they had to dig and hunt for it

That's why you know their sound when you hear it ...
and that's what makes the process so beautiful ...

++++
another step:
I've taken away a lot of the elements I'd added to re-focus on the main drum pattern ...
maybe I'll come back to the 7/4 as an element but not use it as the principle groove ...

but I liked the roll the keys played in the rhythm so I pretty much kept them the same w/ slight adjustments ...

(Dec 2, 2013)

I did a lot of work on this track over the weekend ..
I'd been watching a lot of movies so that gave me a bunch of new ideas I wanted to try..
Films always give me a lot of ideas and journalists have said they can hear the
influence of cinema on my compositions and text...

But when I finished my work session on the track this weekend, I didn't feel
the sound image I had in my head had reached a point of effectiveness yet...

Later on as I was shaving .. it came to me (light bulb) ...
"SO FAR THE TRACK HAS NO THEME,.. NO POINT TO MAKE, NO STORY TO TELL .."

so far the motivation has been to find the textures and
grooves I dig in Elvin Jones' solo .. and then to make a pattern out of that

But I can see
ONE constant factor in my work that I've found effective = it all begins to click when its about something.

So that is my next goal .. to find out the story or theme in the collect of noises I've assembled

++++++

(Dec 7, 2013)
AHHH... another step forward

still no precise topic yet ... but I am feeling something in the direction of the irony and hypocrisy that is present when great beings (dare I say Prophets) leave this planet

and it is then that those who ridiculed and persecuted them, suddenly decide that these same individuals are their heroes.. Among the truly inspired persons this phenomenon creates the sensation that The Greats, The Heroes, The Prophets are truly not human and are from another realm to which they return as the powers controlling this earth did not deserve them in the first place....

( I think this is where this track is headed )

nearing the end ... purpose expressed .. thanks to poet Brian Greer...

... now Parisian multi-media artist http://mariebcros.free.fr/ has integrated this piece into a project we are developing together .. I'm seeing no sounds to add each time I watch the trailer ..

it continues ...

I knew I would come back to this eventually to add an element to this piece that
would kick off a next wave of ideas.. I don't think I anticipated it taking so long, but
this is what was added in the wee hours of the morning August 13th (my date of birth) ..

I am not sure if I will keep the newer synth notes that have been added in
between the pre-existing synth strings, but the interaction between the 2 lines
pull a different emotion out of the introduction of Brian Greer's poem ...

The more I listen to it the less inclined I think I am to keep all of the new lines ...

It is always incredible to hear the conscious process of thought, especially from someone I know well. There is something amazing about hearing the way people process creative thoughts. I often ask my preschoolers to tell me about their art. Just to see how it was developed is amazing especially when the breadth of their vocabulary is not as advanced as and adult. Listening to them find the words to describe their emotions and ideas is art in itself, Poetic even.
Thanks for reading and commenting Omega!!
