In this new work, Napoleon Maddox expresses the dreams and realities that have confronted his family for generations, stretching back to his great-great grandfather, Jacob McKoy.
Maddox, along with master percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani and acclaimed tenor saxophonist, JD Allen —who the New York Times describes as "enigmatic, elegant and hard-driving” — introduces group labor and collective struggle into the diaglogue as he continues to explore the layered themes of interconnectedness within “Twice the First Time” (stories of Millie-Christine). The considerations grew out of imagining the ways Jacob McKoy’s relationship to labor changed as his children (including Millie-Christine) and the nation grew. From survival to provision, from profit to memorial; the demands, goals and motivation for why and how we work evolve within and across generations.
Together, this trio will craft an intrepid soundscape from their own lived experiences of resilience and resistance in the face of intergenerational vulnerability.
