iMaintain & LIVE @ Joker's Pub EP (by Napoleon Maddox & ISWHAT?!)
______________________________ "iMaintain" song review by Jon Wright ________________________________ Overall Impression: Building a refined groove from raw energies, ISWHAT?!'s original track iMaintain is, at it's core, a celebration of truth. Lyrically outlining the human ability to exist in proximity to greatness without fundamentally understanding what it is that makes things great, iMaintain backs up its wisdom with gripping instrumentals and a full-hearted sense of groove that practically demand a spirited physical response! _____________________ Strongest Point(s): Lyrically, this is incredible! Love the reference to Gould, and very appreciative of the lyrical theme. Great lyrical flow, as well - turning the chorus into a rhythmic hook with massive sticking power. Awesome instrumental work throughout - shout out to the sax player holding it down with style! The guitar solo at 2:04 is the best kind of raw, fully musical and emotionally impactful with a perfect sax solo chaser to drive the feel all the way home. All topped off with a vibrant drive and accessible vocals - this is killer work! ___________________________________ Target Audience Appeal: Listeners with an appreciation for full-blown HipHop energies and live instrumentation will find ISWHAT?!'s sound and flow fully magnetic - while the wit and weight of iMaintain's lyrical content holds a powerful pull all its own! - Jon W.______________________________ Artist target suggestions: Common, Tank and The Bangas, Kendrick Lamar, A Tribe Called Quest, Madlib, Mac Miller, The Roots, Del The Funky Homosapien, J.Cole _______________________ About the Reviewer: Jon Wright is a trained multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and music educator with nearly twenty years of experience in the field.
